Transposition Chart

Move a song to any key: every chord in all twelve major and minor keys, and a quick converter that shows each chord’s match in the new key.

Transpose chords to a new key

Key type

C major → G major: Every chord moves up 7 half steps (or down 5).

C→GDm→AmEm→BmF→CG→DAm→EmB°→F♯°

Transposition chart: major keys

Each row is a key; each column is a chord’s place in the key. To transpose, find your chord in the old key’s row, then read the chord in the same column of the new key’s row.

Why transpose?
To fit a song to your voice (or a singer’s), to play along with a recording in a different key, or to swap hard chords for easier ones.
Whole songs
Paste a song into the song sheet builder to transpose every chord at once, with diagrams.

How to transpose a song

  1. Find the song’s key — usually its first or last chord.
  2. Choose the key you want and look up each chord in the chart (or use the converter above).
  3. Chords the chart doesn’t show (like 7ths or sus chords) move the same way: transpose the root, keep the rest. G7 in C becomes D7 in G.
  4. Guitarist? Instead of transposing, a capo can move a song up without changing the shapes you play.
