All downstrums

One strum down on every beat — the first pattern everyone learns. It lets you focus on changing chords in time, and it’s the backbone of a lot of punk and driving rock.

How to play it

  1. Count “1, 2, 3, 4” out loud and strum on each number.
  2. Let your hand come back up between strums without touching the strings — that’s the motion every other pattern builds on.
  3. Keep it even and relaxed: the strum comes from the wrist, not the whole arm.
  4. Start slowly — around 60 BPM — and only speed up once the pattern feels automatic. Use the chord loop to practice changing chords without breaking the rhythm.
