How to play A♯add9
About the A♯ added 9th chord
Playing it
On guitar, the usual A♯add9 shape is xx8768 at the 6th fret. It has no open strings, so it’s a movable shape — slide it along the neck for other added 9th chords. Don’t strum the low E and A strings.
On piano, A♯add9 has one black key (A♯) and three white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.
On ukulele the usual A♯add9 shape is 3213, using four fingers.
Related chords
Move a single note and A♯add9 becomes a different chord: drop the B♯ for A♯, swap B♯ for G♯ for A♯7, swap B♯ for G𝄪 for A♯maj7 and drop the C𝄪 for A♯sus2.
Where you’ll hear it
Notice the C𝄪 in A♯add9 (A♯ C𝄪 E♯ B♯): each note of the chord takes its own letter (A–C–E–B), so the major 3rd has to be written C𝄪 rather than D — the same key on a piano, spelled to fit the chord.
