How to play Fadd9

About the F added 9th chord

Playing it

On guitar, Fadd9 is one of the friendlier shapes: 1030xx needs just two fingers and lets the open strings ring. Don’t strum the B and high E strings.

On piano, Fadd9 sits entirely on white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele it takes a single finger (0010), which makes Fadd9 one of the simplest chords on the instrument.

Related chords

Move a single note and Fadd9 becomes a different chord: drop the G for F, swap G for E♭ for F7, swap G for E for Fmaj7 and drop the A for Fsus2.
