How to play Dadd9

About the D added 9th chord

Playing it

On guitar, the usual Dadd9 shape is x57770 at the 5th fret. It has no open strings, so it’s a movable shape — slide it along the neck for other added 9th chords. Don’t strum the low E string.

On piano, Dadd9 has one black key (F♯) and three white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele the usual Dadd9 shape is 2425, using four fingers.

Related chords

Move a single note and Dadd9 becomes a different chord: drop the E for D, swap E for C for D7, swap E for C♯ for Dmaj7 and drop the F♯ for Dsus2.
