About the F♯ augmented chord

Playing it

On guitar, F♯aug has an open-position shape, 21033x, using four fingers alongside the open strings. Don’t strum the high E string.

On piano, F♯aug has two black keys (F♯ and A♯) and one white key.

On ukulele the usual F♯aug shape is 3221, using four fingers.

Related chords

F♯aug is symmetrical — its notes are evenly spaced — so Daug and B♭aug contain exactly the same notes. There are only four different-sounding augmented chords in all.

Move a single note and F♯aug becomes a different chord: lower C𝄪 to C♯ for F♯.

Where you’ll hear it

Notice the C𝄪 in F♯aug (F♯ A♯ C𝄪): each note of the chord takes its own letter (F–A–C), so the augmented 5th has to be written C𝄪 rather than D — the same key on a piano, spelled to fit the chord.
