How to play E♭m9

About the E♭ minor 9th chord

Playing it

There’s no open-string way to play E♭m9 on guitar with the root in the bass, so the standard shape is a barre across the 11th fret (11-13-11-11-11-13).

On piano, E♭m9 has four black keys (E♭, G♭, B♭ and D♭) and one white key. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele the usual E♭m9 shape is 3524, using four fingers. It leaves out the root, which a bass player (or your ear) fills in.

Related chords

Move a single note and E♭m9 becomes a different chord: drop the F for E♭m7 and raise G♭ to G for E♭9.
