How to play Fm9

About the F minor 9th chord

Playing it

On guitar, Fm9 has an open-position shape, 131044, using four fingers alongside the open strings.

On piano, Fm9 has two black keys (A♭ and E♭) and three white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele the usual Fm9 shape is 0343, using three fingers. It leaves out the root, which a bass player (or your ear) fills in.

Related chords

Move a single note and Fm9 becomes a different chord: drop the G for Fm7 and raise A♭ to A for F9.
