How to play Am9

About the A minor 9th chord

Playing it

On guitar, Am9 is most often played as a barre chord across the 5th fret (575557).

On piano, Am9 sits entirely on white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele it takes a single finger (0002), which makes Am9 one of the simplest chords on the instrument. It leaves out the root, which a bass player (or your ear) fills in.

Related chords

Move a single note and Am9 becomes a different chord: drop the B for Am7 and raise C to C♯ for A9.
