D D DU DU — the driving pop strum

Two plain downstrums, then down-ups to finish the bar. It pushes forward into the next bar, which makes it great for upbeat pop and rock choruses.

How to play it

  1. Beats 1 and 2 are downstrums only; beats 3 and 4 add the upstrums.
  2. Change chords during the last upstrum — it’s the lightest, so a slightly messy change won’t be heard.
  3. Start slowly — around 60 BPM — and only speed up once the pattern feels automatic. Use the chord loop to practice changing chords without breaking the rhythm.
