How to play Gmaj9

About the G major 9th chord

Playing it

On guitar, Gmaj9 is one of the friendlier shapes: 300002 needs just two fingers and lets the open strings ring.

On piano, Gmaj9 has one black key (F♯) and four white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele the usual Gmaj9 shape is 2222, with the index finger barring all four strings at the 2nd fret. It leaves out the root, which a bass player (or your ear) fills in.

Related chords

Move a single note and Gmaj9 becomes a different chord: drop the A for Gmaj7, drop the F♯ for Gadd9 and lower F♯ to F for G9.
