How to play Fmaj9

About the F major 9th chord

Playing it

On guitar, Fmaj9 is one of the friendlier shapes: 1020x0 needs just two fingers and lets the open strings ring. Don’t strum the B string.

On piano, Fmaj9 sits entirely on white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele, Fmaj9 needs no fingers at all: the four open strings — G, C, E and A — spell it out.

Related chords

Move a single note and Fmaj9 becomes a different chord: drop the G for Fmaj7, drop the E for Fadd9 and lower E to E♭ for F9.
