How to play G♯maj9

About the G♯ major 9th chord

Playing it

There’s no open-string way to play G♯maj9 on guitar with the root in the bass, so the standard shape is a barre across the 1st fret (411113).

On piano, G♯maj9 has three black keys (G♯, D♯ and A♯) and two white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele the usual G♯maj9 shape is 0041, using two fingers.

Related chords

Move a single note and G♯maj9 becomes a different chord: drop the A♯ for G♯maj7, drop the F𝄪 for G♯add9 and lower F𝄪 to F♯ for G♯9.

Where you’ll hear it

Notice the B♯ in G♯maj9 (G♯ B♯ D♯ F𝄪 A♯): each note of the chord takes its own letter (G–B–D–F–A), so the major 3rd has to be written B♯ rather than C — the same key on a piano, spelled to fit the chord.
