How to play G♭6

About the G♭ major 6th chord

Playing it

On guitar, the usual G♭6 shape is xx4342 at the 2nd fret. It has no open strings, so it’s a movable shape — slide it along the neck for other major 6th chords. Don’t strum the low E and A strings.

On piano, every note of G♭6 is a black key.

On ukulele the usual G♭6 shape is 6666, with the index finger barring all four strings at the 6th fret.

Related chords

G♭6 contains exactly the same notes as E♭m7. Which name fits depends on which note is in the bass and what key you’re in.

Move a single note and G♭6 becomes a different chord: drop the E♭ for G♭, raise E♭ to F♭ for G♭7, swap E♭ for F for G♭maj7 and lower B♭ to B𝄫 for G♭m6.
