How to play A6

About the A major 6th chord

Playing it

On guitar, A6 is one of the friendlier shapes: x02222 needs just one finger and lets the open strings ring. Don’t strum the low E string.

On piano, A6 has two black keys (C♯ and F♯) and two white keys.

On ukulele the usual A6 shape is 2120, using three fingers.

Related chords

A6 contains exactly the same notes as F♯m7. Which name fits depends on which note is in the bass and what key you’re in.

Move a single note and A6 becomes a different chord: drop the F♯ for A, raise F♯ to G for A7, swap F♯ for G♯ for Amaj7 and lower C♯ to C for Am6.
