How to play D6

About the D major 6th chord

Playing it

On guitar, D6 is one of the friendlier shapes: xx0202 needs just two fingers and lets the open strings ring. Don’t strum the low E and A strings.

On piano, D6 has one black key (F♯) and three white keys.

On ukulele the usual D6 shape is 2222, with the index finger barring all four strings at the 2nd fret.

Related chords

D6 contains exactly the same notes as Bm7. Which name fits depends on which note is in the bass and what key you’re in.

Move a single note and D6 becomes a different chord: drop the B for D, raise B to C for D7, swap B for C♯ for Dmaj7 and lower F♯ to F for Dm6.
