How to play Cm6

About the C minor 6th chord

Playing it

There’s no open-string way to play Cm6 on guitar with the root in the bass, so the standard shape is a barre across the 8th fret (8-10-10-8-10-8). While you build strength, you can play just the top four strings of the same shape (x-x-10-8-10-8).

On piano, Cm6 has one black key (E♭) and three white keys.

On ukulele the usual Cm6 shape is 2333, using four fingers.

Related chords

Cm6 contains exactly the same notes as Am7♭5. Which name fits depends on which note is in the bass and what key you’re in.

Move a single note and Cm6 becomes a different chord: drop the A for Cm, raise A to B♭ for Cm7, raise E♭ to E for C6 and lower G to G♭ for Cdim7.
