Playing it

On guitar, Fm6 is most often played as a barre chord across the 1st fret (133131). While you build strength, you can play just the top four strings of the same shape (xx3131).

On piano, Fm6 has one black key (A♭) and three white keys.

On ukulele the usual Fm6 shape is 1213, using four fingers.

Related chords

Fm6 contains exactly the same notes as Dm7♭5. Which name fits depends on which note is in the bass and what key you’re in.

Move a single note and Fm6 becomes a different chord: drop the D for Fm, raise D to E♭ for Fm7, raise A♭ to A for F6 and lower C to C♭ for Fdim7.
