Playing it

On guitar, Am6 has an open-position shape, x02212, using four fingers alongside the open strings. Don’t strum the low E string.

On piano, Am6 has one black key (F♯) and three white keys.

On ukulele the usual Am6 shape is 2020, using two fingers.

Related chords

Am6 contains exactly the same notes as F♯m7♭5. Which name fits depends on which note is in the bass and what key you’re in.

Move a single note and Am6 becomes a different chord: drop the F♯ for Am, raise F♯ to G for Am7, raise C to C♯ for A6 and lower E to E♭ for Adim7.
