Playing it

On guitar, Em6 is one of the friendlier shapes: 042000 needs just two fingers and lets the open strings ring.

On piano, Em6 has one black key (C♯) and three white keys.

On ukulele the usual Em6 shape is 0102, using two fingers.

Related chords

Em6 contains exactly the same notes as C♯m7♭5. Which name fits depends on which note is in the bass and what key you’re in.

Move a single note and Em6 becomes a different chord: drop the C♯ for Em, raise C♯ to D for Em7, raise G to G♯ for E6 and lower B to B♭ for Edim7.
