On guitar, Am(maj7) has an open-position shape, x02110, using three fingers alongside the open strings. Don’t strum the low E string.

On piano, Am(maj7) has one black key (G♯) and three white keys.

On ukulele it takes a single finger (1000), which makes Am(maj7) one of the simplest chords on the instrument.

Related chords

Take away the root and the other three notes form Caug (C E G♯) — so you can think of Am(maj7) as Caug with A added underneath.

Move a single note and Am(maj7) becomes a different chord: drop the G♯ for Am, raise C to C♯ for Amaj7, lower G♯ to G for Am7 and swap G♯ for F♯ for Am6.
