How to play Asus4

About the A suspended 4th chord

Asus4 is usually heard right before A: the D “suspends” the C♯ and then resolves back down to it. Rocking between A and Asus4 is a classic way to add movement to a single chord.

Playing it

On guitar, Asus4 is one of the friendlier shapes: x00230 needs just two fingers and lets the open strings ring. Don’t strum the low E string.

On piano, Asus4 sits entirely on white keys.

On ukulele the usual Asus4 shape is 2200, using two fingers.

Related chords

Asus4 contains exactly the same notes as Dsus2. Which name fits depends on which note is in the bass and what key you’re in.

Move a single note and Asus4 becomes a different chord: lower D to C♯ for A, swap D for C for Am, swap D for B for Asus2 and add G for A7sus4.
