How to play Am(add9)

About the A minor added 9th chord

Playing it

On guitar, Am(add9) has an open-position shape, x02410, using three fingers alongside the open strings. Don’t strum the low E string.

On piano, Am(add9) sits entirely on white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele it takes a single finger (4000), which makes Am(add9) one of the simplest chords on the instrument.

Related chords

Move a single note and Am(add9) becomes a different chord: drop the B for Am, swap B for G for Am7, drop the C for Asus2 and swap B for F♯ for Am6.
