How to play Bm(maj7)

About the B minor-major 7th chord

Playing it

On guitar, Bm(maj7) is one of the friendlier shapes: x2030x needs just two fingers and lets the open strings ring. Don’t strum the low E and high E strings.

On piano, Bm(maj7) has two black keys (F♯ and A♯) and two white keys.

On ukulele the usual Bm(maj7) shape is 3222, with a small 3-string barre at the 2nd fret.

Related chords

Take away the root and the other three notes form Daug (D F♯ A♯) — so you can think of Bm(maj7) as Daug with B added underneath.

Move a single note and Bm(maj7) becomes a different chord: drop the A♯ for Bm, raise D to D♯ for Bmaj7, lower A♯ to A for Bm7 and swap A♯ for G♯ for Bm6.
