How to play Em(add9)

About the E minor added 9th chord

Playing it

On guitar, Em(add9) is one of the friendlier shapes: 024000 needs just two fingers and lets the open strings ring.

On piano, Em(add9) has one black key (F♯) and three white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele the usual Em(add9) shape is 0422, with a small 2-string barre at the 2nd fret.

Related chords

Move a single note and Em(add9) becomes a different chord: drop the F♯ for Em, swap F♯ for D for Em7, drop the G for Esus2 and swap F♯ for C♯ for Em6.
