How to play Bm(add9)

About the B minor added 9th chord

Playing it

There’s no open-string way to play Bm(add9) on guitar with the root in the bass, so the standard shape is a barre across the 7th fret (799779). While you build strength, you can play just the top four strings of the same shape (xx9779).

On piano, Bm(add9) has two black keys (F♯ and C♯) and two white keys. In root position it spans more than an octave, so many pianists play the root with the left hand and the rest with the right.

On ukulele the usual Bm(add9) shape is 4224, using four fingers.

Related chords

Move a single note and Bm(add9) becomes a different chord: drop the C♯ for Bm, swap C♯ for A for Bm7, drop the D for Bsus2 and swap C♯ for G♯ for Bm6.
