How to play Dsus4

About the D suspended 4th chord

Dsus4 → D is one of the most recognizable moves in folk and rock guitar: hammer your pinky onto the 3rd fret of the high E string and lift it off again.

Playing it

On guitar, Dsus4 has an open-position shape, xx0233, using three fingers alongside the open strings. Don’t strum the low E and A strings.

On piano, Dsus4 sits entirely on white keys.

On ukulele the usual Dsus4 shape is 0230, using two fingers.

Related chords

Dsus4 contains exactly the same notes as Gsus2. Which name fits depends on which note is in the bass and what key you’re in.

Move a single note and Dsus4 becomes a different chord: lower G to F♯ for D, swap G for F for Dm, swap G for E for Dsus2 and add C for D7sus4.
